Fellow 1000 Islanders,

Happy New Year. Welcome to 2006! May it be a good one for you and yours.

We start the year with an Uncle Sam tour boat Captain and all around genuine River Rat, Dennis Honeywell as this month’s winner. Our December scene incidentally, was the winter version of the page 41 Lost Channel shot in “The 1000 Islands”, taken from precisely the same spot, but looking very different because of winter.

“This beautiful sight is looking southwest from the arch span of the TI bridge system. Mike Bresnehan's cottage/island is right below the span and several attractive sailboats are frequently anchored in that lovely bay on the upper right. The lovely Canadian cottages along the Hill Island shore on the upper left are always a thrill for our guests to see when we have them out for a boat ride. House of the Seven Gables as it is sometimes called is just up out of sight on the top right. A beautiful shot indeed.”

Many thanks Dennis. While they aren’t anywhere to be seen in the above shot, the Lost Channel is a favored winter feeding spot for bald eagles. A few years ago, I counted 14 of them in the trees and on the ice, right here. Bud Andress, who studies the eagles and lives nearby, told us in the May posting that as many as 100 winter in the area. It’s also a great place to spot deer whose tracks are pretty much always to be seen on the ice, sometimes alarmingly close to open water.

Ok. One month of winter scenes is about enough. Time for a little more warmth:

As usual, we’re not only looking for the location of this scene, but lore and brief stories to go with it. As with Dennis, the winner will receive a set of 6 – 1000 Islands prints.

Enjoy!

Ian

I recognize this! Not very far from where I spent all my summers as a child, this is a photo taken of the fields at Mid-River farm looking towards the Slate's farm in the background. The angle is from the head of grindstone on the north west side of the island down river.

The Notification List

One afternoon at a book signing, a lady shared with me a profound statement. "The River chooses some". Those of us who were chosen, spend winters longing to get back. To help my winter longings and yours too, each winter month I enjoy sharing a computer screensaver image to help infuse a little summer warmth into your day. I also outline the latest additions to ThousandIslandsLife.com online magazine.
