Fellow 1000 Islanders,

Go figure! While December’s shot of Grenadier had plenty of correct answers and November’s much trickier shot of the Punts Islands had a few, last month’s shot is a scene that virtually everyone is familiar with, yet only a single person identified it correctly. You’ll all kick yourselves when you read further because most 1000 Islanders know this area well.

Last Month

Temple Touchette is the winner. Actually Temple is part of a group that Patty Mondore assembled which she calls “The New York State Photo Identification Team”. It includes her husband Bob, Dan Cookes and Temple amongst others. Each month they put their heads together to try to win these contests. This month they did, thanks to Temple’s caption:

“In the 1960s during summer vacation I was a waitress at the Edgewood. After work we would sometimes take a boat ride from the docks in Alex Bay to Ina Island to dance (and in some cases drink). I would also have friends visit on weekends and my parents let me use their boat, an old 16 foot Lyman to go to The Bay to see a movie. Well, we never went to the movies but crossed the channel and went to Ina Island. It is a wonder we made it back safe and sound as there are many shoals in the area. Guess we were lucky. When our sons were in high school and college we would not allow them to be on the river at night. They visit us at the river every summer. We go for long boat rides but never at night.”

A collection of 6 prints of the lighthouses of the 1000 Islands is on its way to you Temple. I’ll let you decide how to deal with your teammates.

Just in case Ina (center right) doesn’t tip you to this shot’s location, in the background of the photo you can just make out Rockport’s Boathouse Restaurant with their wonderful patio deck where I very much enjoy eating, Rockport Boat Lines and historic Andress Boat Works along the far Canadian shore. To the left is Zavikon Island. I told you that you knew this area!

For this month I’ll consider stories relating to just the boat or to the area. Preference will lean towards stories that include identifying this location.

Enjoy!
