As winter begins to release its grip and thoughts of heading back to the island come into clearer focus, I thought I’d share a slightly different view for our March wallpaper. As gorgeous as we all know the River to be during daylight hours, the right evening arguably presents just as compelling a view.

Sister Island Light sits alongside the southeastern end of Grenadier Island. Built in 1870, its first keeper, Captain William Dodge was a good friend of Grenadier’s Billy Buell. Despite both islands being close, communication wasn’t easy as cellphones weren’t very efficient in those days. Dodge’s solution was to train his Newfoundland dog to swim the quarter mile, delivering messages back and forth.

Paul Matthews of Vestal, NY got last month’s image exactly right: “It looks like a September shot....water was back down a bit and we had a 3 week stretch where we hardly had a ripple...day or night. I’d never seen the river so…..relaxed." Spot on Paul. I took the opportunity to snap it just before we made the transition to shore and then on to France.

December 1st brings with it the first winter wallpaper image of the season with the hope it brings back warm memories of a place we all appreciate. If you know the location of this scene, don’t be shy to share it as well as any River stories it might prompt.

This is not only the last wallpaper image of the season, but the 100th that I’ve shared since I began putting numbers on them in my file.
